How to become a great sight reader (and not wait for your neighbor to sing first)

Attention Singers!

I want to tell you about the one overlooked skill that massively changed my singing career...

In 2005… I first joined a collegiate level choir, it became painfully obvious that I needed to learn more about sight reading (even though I could already play piano!).

Every rehearsal we would be looking at some brand new music and I was the guy that would wait for the singers around me to “get the right note”, and then I WOULD SING A SPLIT SECOND LATER.

I was really embarrassed and had many thoughts like "Is there something wrong with me?"
"Why can’t I figure out the pitches as fast as the other singers?"

These are questions really bothered me…

After every rehearsal, I would go home and listen to our music OVER and OVER until it finally stuck in my head.

WHY singers sing FLAT?

vocal technique Jan 22, 2024

Do you ever struggle with singing FLAT?

So many singers tend to go FLAT, especially when they are going for the higher notes

And surprisingly, it’s not because they can’t “hear” the note

In this short article, I'm going to teach you WHY most singers go flat - so you can figure out if you've got one of these problems!

95% of the time, going flat is one of these three causes:

  1. They are pulling up the chest voice, the bottom part of the voice, to reach those notes. Pushing up too much vocal weight.

You can’t do that!
Remember, as you go up in pitch, your vocal folds have to stretch, elongate and thin

I didn’t make that up - It’s physics.

If you don’t let that process happen, you’re fighting your own voice

  1. Not enough space in the mouth/throat.

As we get higher, we need slightly taller vowels

A little bit more yawning space…

Or else, again, you’re not letting your voice do what it wants to do

  1. Not enough air...

Voice Lessons vs. Online Training Programs

vocal technique Oct 30, 2023

Hello!

Do you want to improve your vocal technique?

Do you struggle with breath support, good tone or other common issues?

If so, what is the difference between traditional voice lessons and taking an online training course?

In this article, I will be sharing some of the pros and cons of each method.

Before we get into it, I want to remind you that tomorrow is the last day to get Advanced Vocal Technique for 50% off!  Just use the discount code "SPOOKY50" at the checkout.

Ok, here we go!

Option 1 is taking voice lessons with a local teacher.  You could go to their studio once a week and work on various pieces of music together. They would teach you vocal technique in-person.

PROS:

1) Direct feedback/interaction - your teacher can hear how you sound and make adjustments on the spot

2) Results - with an expert vocal teacher, you have the greatest chance of improvement.  With a poorly qualified teacher, you could learn some bad singing habits.

This is something you can teach your singers:

Tell them that the voice needs time to warm up, and this exercise can help everyone to feel how warmed up they are.
